Songbirds widely disperse ticks that carry a diversity of pathogens, a few of which are pathogenic to humans. Among ticks frequently removed from songbirds, the blacklegged tick, Ixodes scapularis, can harbor any mix of nine zoonotic pathogens, including Babesia species.
