For assessing isolates of Listeria monocytogenes, serotype designation is the first subtyping method used. Methodologies used to assign serotype are currently evolving and will eventually be replaced with whole genome sequencing. Traditionally, serotyping has been done with agglutination reactions; however, alternative methods utilizing enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are common.
