Injection of l-lactate significantly increased glutamate levels in the amygdala and hippocampus. Duration of freezing induced by l-lactate was significantly inhibited by the AMPA receptor antagonist NBQX. In addition, injection of NBQX into the amygdala and hippocampus significantly inhibited duration of freezing in STZ-induced diabetic mice. These results suggest that l-lactate levels are increased in the amygdala and hippocampus in diabetic mice, which may enhance fear memory though activation of glutamatergic function in the amygdala
