Detection of pathogen-derived DNA or RNA species by cellular nucleic acid sensors prompts release of anti-microbial interferons and cytokines. In contrast to their protective anti-microbial functions, inappropriate or excessive activation of nucleic acid sensors can cause inflammatory diseases.
