Tetrahydrofolic acid and formaldehyde are key human metabolites but their physiologically relevant chemistry is undefined. Our NMR studies confirm formaldehyde as a product of tetrahydrofolic acid degradation but also reveal their reaction regulates the stability of tetrahydrofolic acid.
