In this work, hydroxybutyl starch prepared by acid, alkali, and acid-base synergistic pretreatments from waxy corn starch exhibited great potential for preparing temperature-sensitive hydrogels. The degree of substitution, morphology, and group structure of hydroxybutyl starch were determined.
