The proof of concept for conditionally activatable photocages is demonstrated on a new vinyltetrazine-derivatized coumarin. The tetrazine form is disabled in terms of light-induced cargo release, however, bioorthogonal transformation of the modulating tetrazine moiety results in fully restored photoresponsivity.
