Although the transition between a bilayer and an interdigitated membrane of a surfactant and lipid has been widely known for long, its mechanism remains unclear. This study reveals the transition mechanism of a cationic surfactant, dioctadecyldimethylammonium chloride (DODAC), through experiments and theoretical calculations.
