Ultrasmall Bi₂O₃ nanoparticles (davg = 1.5 nm) coated with biocompatible and hydrophilic D-glucuronic acid were prepared for the first time through a simple one-step polyol process and their potential as CT contrast agents were investigated by measuring their X-ray attenuation properties.
