Mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy (MNGIE) is a rare, inherited, multisystemic autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the nuclear TYMP gene. This syndrome is characterized by ptosis, external ophthalmoplegia, gastrointestinal dysmotility, cachexia, peripheral neuropathy, and leukoencephalopathy.
