Using a fluorescent intravital microscopy set up, we quantified ozone-induced extensive alveolar cellular damage. We observed ozone-induced actin filament disorganization, perturbed respiratory mechanics, acute suppression of the alveolar reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and mitochondrial potential in ventilated lungs. We present evidence of systemic, as well as pulmonary toxicity, at 40-fold lower ozone concentrations than previously reported in mice.
