In my carreer in chemical development, one of the most difficult problems I encounter is how to promote scientific progress and technological innovation without negatively impacting the environment. I have wrote an article on the subject linked on this page. To be clear, no one is arguing that development is inherently bad. Indeed, who among us wouldn't be interested in discovering a game-changing innovation that could alter the course of history? But here's the thing: breakthroughs in chemical processes and the creation of novel substances never occur in a laboratory by themselves. The problem's actual effects on ecosystems, human health, and the environment are worrisome.
