In the wild, Black Vultures build their nests on the ground or in a hollow tree or rock crevice. They do not defend their nesting sites. They form long-term monogamous pairs and roost and forage together year-round. They often reuse successful nesting sites for years. They are scavengers and help keep the ecosystem healthy by promptly disposing of dead animals and reducing disease transmission through hygienic behavior, including burying carcasses. Unlike other birds that nest in trees or in the open, Black Vultures prefer to lay their eggs on the
