The purpose of this paper is to explore the benefits of pass-fail grading as opposed to the more frequently used letter grade system in dental education. A pass-fail system can enhance student wellbeing, facilitate intrinsic motivation, and promote competency based education. Although this review is primarily based on literature from North America, this discussion is still relevant to European audiences because the issue of pass fail is an inherent grading issue in all types of education.
