We quantified trading methods over a 3-wk duration making use of a recently created technique that allowed us to label stone phosphate with fluorescing quantum dots of three different colours. We discovered that the fungus compensated for resource reduction within the 'crash' treatment by moving phosphorus from alternative pools closer to the host root (Daucus carota); and kept the surplus nutritional elements in the 'boom' treatment until root demand increased.
