The name "royal blue" appeared between 1810 and 1820. The "royal" in the name comes from the British royalty, where this shade of blue is said to have been created by a tailor in a competition to make a dress for Queen Charlotte in the early 19th century. Over the years, royal blue has undergone a change. In the 1950s the original royal was much darker than what the World Wide Web Consortium approved in the 80s.
