It causes shading, bleaching, physical damage, necrosis, and death. This study gives the first research that direct contact by plastic and cotton strikes coral health within 60 times. In a controlled tank research, two common Indo-Pacific scleractinian corals, Porites rus and Pavona cactus, had been shaded for 60 days by clear plastic (polypropylene, PP), dark plastic (PP) and cotton fiber. Cotton disintegrated totally after 30 to 42 times, permitting the corals to recuperate.
